How auto-invest works in M1 Finance

Another $1000 transfer and auto-invest were made. My portfolio now had 37 holdings. Yesterday’s portfolio adjustment triggered the buying activity of 14 stocks. After looking at the details of which stocks were purchased yesterday and today, I now have a better understanding of how these auto-invest works.

  1. If you remove a pie completely, all stocks in the pie will be sold
  2. Similarly, if you remove stock slices in a pie, those removed stocks will be sold during the next trading window.
  3. Sum of all pies in a portfolio needs to be 100%
  4. Sum of stock slices in a pie needs to be 100%
  5. If Actual % of a pie is lower than the target, M1 will buy the stocks in that pie. (Nothing happens when actual % is higher than the target)
  6. If Actual % of stock in a pie is lower than the target, M1 will buy the stock. (Nothing happens when actual % is higher than the target)
  7. You can delete all pies. You need at least 1 pie in your portfolio.

I deleted 3 pies, Basic Materials, Telecom and Utilities, yesterday and raised the percentage of real estate pie. I have also removed a few stocks in finance and industrial pies. This resulted in purchasing real estate, finance, and industrial stocks to re-balance to the new allocations I set yesterday. M1 will only buy the stocks that are lower than the target % and skips the ones that are higher than the target %. If you want to stop buying stocks and just hold them, you can set the target of those stocks at 1% and M1 will no longer purchase the stocks until actual % falls below 1%.

My portfolio is now at $9302.60.

My portfolio value as of 8/7/2020
